Mackenzie Melo She brings us to a space within that is located outside. It is as if we are transported to a different dimension, one that is kind of unknown but that seems to echo some of our own known and comforting parts! I am so glad that I was able to find Sophie's music in this lifetime! Favorite track: Falling.

about

My love of the kora began in 2009, on my first visit to Burkina Faso and West Africa. There I discovered the musical culture of the Mandingue tradition, and its majestic instrument: the kora. The music moved me deeply, and over the next few years I listened compulsively, devouring all the recordings of kora players I could find. I was a classical violinist who had grown up on Bach and Beethoven and this felt like my second musical awakening. I hesitated to take a lesson but a serendipitous encounter in New York City with Kora player Yakouba Sissoko was the sign I needed. I began studying with him, followed soon after by a master class in Paris with legendary kora virtuoso, Toumani Diabaté. When Toumani invited me to Mali, I packed my bags and leapt into the unknown.

I spent seven years studying the kora and its traditional repertoire in Mali. And while I continue to study the repertoire, I felt the stirring of my own music and my own stories. With the blessing and encouragement of my many teachers and mentors including Fode Seydi, Noumoucounda Cissoko, and Awa Kassé Mady Diabaté, with gratitude, I began to compose music on the kora.

"Bamako" is a collection of songs, written and recorded over three years, mostly in Mali. After failed starts, a pandemic, and two coups d’états in two years, the album was finished in 2021.
The music is deeply inspired by my years in Mali - rhythmically, and in its choice of instrumentation: the immaculate licks provided by the djeli ngoni run throughout the album. Forama, Yafa are sung in Bambara and feature the magnificent Awa Kassé Mady Diabaté. Tavaszi Szél is a nod to my Hungarian heritage and musical beginnings. The English language songs are mostly about the dissolution of love. Fighting for a relationship in the name of love is noble, but acknowledging when it no longer aligns with you and having the courage to let go, is also brave.
`
Deciding to study the kora and move to Mali forever changed my life. It was hard and sometimes lonely, but it gave me the great gifts of a new family, language, and musical culture. I am forever grateful for the work of all the musicians on the album who played and contributed arrangements during incredibly difficult times. And having Habib Koité join me on two songs on this album after seeing him play in Ouagadougou thirteen years before, was a dream I couldn't have imagined. It reinforced a deep belief that we are all connected in love and that music is a conduit. I hope this album can be a small contribution to that which unites us.
